Lindy Vopnfjord – State of the Heart

Obviously Canadian/Icelandic artist, Lindy Vopnfiord, having recorded an 8th LP has his admirers. He has one more.

The meticulous perfectionist, crafts interesting stories with his music. To appreciate this, despite some controversial subject matter, you need only sample it. There’s good music here. Lindy doesn’t attempt to ruffle feathers. He sets the stage early with “this was meant to be a protest song/but the politics were wrong/not a time to be sublime/let’s leave the politics behind.”

Songs do involve environmental issues, human rights & community action with a modern twist on folk.

The beautifully recorded “State of the Heart,” has a traditional old-English fiddle sound. To my ears Lindy’s voice is pop-oriented but as applied — can’t deny he doesn’t possess a purist sound. The LP State of the Heart (Independent – drops May 22) maintains a definitive authenticity both in its musical showcase & Lindy’s performance.

“Breathe,” tends to get away from folksiness & skips along in a more commercial pop vein. That’s not a bad thing. The drum stylization is interesting with an under the surface clarinet sound that swims muffled under the percussion. It’s followed by a sprightly ballad mindful of the late Clifford T. Ward, whose earlier melodic tunes (“Gaye,” & “Wherewithal”) are similar in spirit instrumentally. The orchestrations decorate a song like “Can We Still Be Lovers,” effectively.

The wonderful “Won’t You Come & See Me Sometime,” has harmonica, & Lindy sings in the popular songwriter style of Jonathan Edwards (“Sunshine”). A little smokier in tone “Letters,” is a well-crafted lyric in the tradition of Gilbert O’Sullivan’s old-fashioned style. “Maybe the Sun,” continues with Lindy’s expressive voice.

“Cutting Room Floor,” is typically commercial but too Euro-pop in flavor. Costume jewelry among jewels. Way too many lalala’s & better suited to another era.

Lindy redeems himself with the gorgeous & realistically sad “Until I Have to Let You Go.” This is a masterpiece. A gentle tale about a father’s thoughts as he teaches his child to ride a bike. How the words “until I have to let you go,” is applied between letting go of the back of a bike, to when he has to really let go of his child. This is memorable.

How many songwriters take time to explore poignantly such a difficult time in one’s life? I think it’s brilliant in its simplicity. Enough to swell tears in a parent’s eyes.

Follow this with Cat Steven’s “Father & Son,” & David Knopfler’s “Gone Fishing,” (where a father tells his boss he won’t be in to work that day – because he’s going fishing with his son).

There was no individual musician info. The 10-track CD was produced by Danny Michel.
Canadian/Icelandic singer-songwriter Lindy Vopnfjörd released his latest album You Will Know When It’s Right at the end of March to some accredited fanfare. Recorded with legendary Icelandic songwriter Daníel Ágúst Haraldsson, this album looks to be a great one with Vopnfjörd’s unique storytelling.

The opening track “Love Me Like That” was the debut single from the album and a great start to get people into the style of Vopnfjörd. It’s a very catchy, sing-along song with a great mix of musical tones throughout, showing how the flow of the album will take you.

The follow-up track “Standing on the Sea” reminds me of The Beatles. One of the catchiest rhythms I’ve heard from the start and unique vocals mixed in, this is something that everyone would enjoy. Most people assume this is a classic hit where it’s a new, modern song.

“Our Greatest Irony” is a slower jam, where Vopnfjörd’s voice really shines. Focused more on his vocals with a beautiful, harmonizing piano track in the back and a simple drumline to accompany it. “How Did We Get Away” is a similar vocal-forward song and simple acoustic guitar tracks to emphasise on the lyrics.

The closing track “I’m so Hi” shows Vopnfjörd’s vocal range, ironically his voice goes very high at some points. It’s a very simple and beautiful ending to the album. However, this isn’t the final song. Vopnfjörd included a live version of “Lover Sister” in Reykjavik, which is the capital of Iceland. This is a very unique way to end an album as it shows his album voice and live voice are exactly the same and shows that he encourages sing-alongs as you can hear the crowd interacting with the song.

This album is great for anyone who enjoys some good music. Every song on this album has a unique feel to it that anyone can pick up and enjoy a different track. Making a name for yourself in two different countries is a hard task, but Vopnfjörd has nailed it.
LINDY VOPNFJÖRÐtag:www.lindymusic.com,2005:Post/56736272019-03-08T13:13:51-05:002019-03-08T13:14:52-05:00SiriusXM - North Americana #359 Adds "Love Me Like That"
SiriusXM Canada Music Blast March 7th, 2019

BY DAVID FRIEND · FEBRUARY 2, 2017

TORONTO — Folk singer-songwriter Lindy Vopnfjord climbed into bed stunned on the night Donald Trump won the U.S. presidency, but he awoke the next morning feeling activated.

Bristling with an urge to speak out, the Icelandic-Canadian musician wrote a series of lyrics that might’ve seemed alarmist at the time.

And even two weeks ago, when he finally released “Darkness is the Day” to coincide with Trump’s inauguration, some of the words didn’t resonate quite as much as they do now.

“Opinion is king, one-plus-one is three. The loudest truth is the truest, so repeat after me,” Vopnfjord sings. “It takes a little time to get the spin to unwind. It takes a little time.”

Vopnfjord is stunned by the evolution of his song’s significance.

“There’s so much that keeps feeding into the lyrics,” he says. “There was more to it than maybe even I realized.”

He’s just one of countless musicians using their voice to push against what they see as an alarming political climate. Over the past month, prominent artists have contributed a chorus of anti-Trump anthems, which started flowing out ahead of the election last November.

Tracks by Arcade Fire and Mavis Staples (“I Give You Power”), Fiona Apple (“Tiny Hands”) and the Gorillaz (“Hallelujah Money”) have stood out as recent highlights.

Before that, artists like Franz Ferdinand (“Demagogue”), Jimmy Eat World (“My Enemy”) and Amy Mann (“Can’t You Tell?”) collaborated for “30 Days, 30 Songs,” a project that counted down to election day in the hopes of drawing attention to Trump’s potential power. The campaign recently expanded to 1,000 songs that will be revealed throughout Trump’s presidency.

Listeners appear eager to hear more protest songs too.

Several anti-Trump anthems became viral hits last year, including Ledinsky’s “Donald Trump Makes Me Wanna Smoke Crack” and YG & Nipsey Hussle’s “FDT,” a rousing rap track which pairs an expletive with the president’s initials.

All of this newfound inspiration has longtime social-activist musician Buffy Sainte-Marie a bit suspicious. She questions why some artists only decided to write protest songs when there’s “going to be money” in it.

But she’s also not against more people speaking out.

“The art of the two-and-a-half minute song — it’s such a powerful tool,” she says.

“If you can say something in three minutes that somebody else had to write a 400-page book about, the book is going to be shelved. The song can live forever.”

Sainte-Marie says she writes her songs with the mindset of a photographer capturing snapshots of history.

Her 1964 protest anthem “Universal Soldier” was a portrait of the Vietnam War era while “Now That the Buffalo’s Gone” tackled the centuries-old plight of indigenous communities that still continues today.

She wrote “Universal Soldier” as if she was a student crafting an essay for a hypothetical professor who didn’t see eye-to-eye with her perspective.

“I was determined to get an ‘A-plus’ out of this guy,” she says.

“(I was) deliberately trying to give people a different point of view than they may have come across before.”

Fellow activist songwriter Bruce Cockburn is cautious when it comes to deciding how to express his opinions through music.

With a career spanning nearly 40 years, he’s found himself inspired by causes like the environment (“If a Tree Falls”) and the devastation of war (“If I Had a Rocket Launcher”). But so far, the U.S. election hasn’t motivated him to write anything pointed, and he says it might not.

He says he doesn’t want to veer into territory where he’s just spouting his political views against a backdrop of bad music.

“It’s not always obvious to put it in a song that (doesn’t simply become) a propaganda diatribe,” says Cockburn, who will receive the People’s Voice Award at the Folk Alliance International awards show in Kansas City, Mo., this month in recognition of his social and political commentary.

So many political songs just capitalize on anger, he argues, but don’t have any artistic merit. He points to 1965’s “Eve of Destruction,” a song recorded by Barry McGuire that topped the Billboard charts, as one example of a misfire.

“It was a huge hit, but a terrible song,” he says.

Cockburn suggests the track was too literal and sounds especially dated now. Many protest songs that attack their subject head-on suffer the same fate of becoming irrelevant, he adds.

Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” stands as a far superior example, he suggests, or “We Shall Overcome,” which began as a hymn in the early 1900s and evolved into an anthem of the civil rights movement.

“It had tremendous application over the years to any number of causes,” he says of the latter.

“It’s absolutely timeless.”

For his sixth full-length record, singer-songwriter Lindy Vopnfjörd takes his listeners on a tour of introspection with an instrumentally sparse and lyrically potent album. The record veers away from some of his pop-oriented work and focuses on the sentimentalities of a folk singer, returning Lindy to his roots.

Frozen In Time delivers an intimacy between Lindy and the listener. Recorded with producer, and longtime collaborator, Todor Kobakov, the record’s melodic resonance taps into a sincerity marked by serene imagery. The natural world is an important part of this record. It comes to life in songs like “Force of Nature” with the lines, “There’s a break in the dam and a crack in the earth/And how many deaths will rise from its berth?/And crumble the statues of men that are broken/And take back the dreams they had stolen”.

In typical folk-singer fashion, Lindy marries socio-political preoccupations with a focus on the vocals and guitars. The Icelandic-Canadian singer displays his mandate of telling stories for those unable to speak for themselves.

What makes these songs even more powerful is their relationship to real individuals. Two of the songs were inspired by Yeonmi Park and her desire to escape North Korea to reunite with family members. Another inspiration came from an English Professor who sent Lindy his diary when he was wrongfully imprisoned in India. Though the subject matter of these personal plights is sometimes dark, the melodic sensibilities along with Lindy’s soothing release, tenderly touches on these themes of oppression.

With its soothing sounds and dreamy vocals, Frozen In Time will no doubt keep you warm as these cold winter months narrow in.
LINDY VOPNFJÖRÐtag:www.lindymusic.com,2005:Post/44716872016-11-18T14:05:00-05:002018-09-10T07:04:53-04:00Hamilton's View Magazine Nov 17, 2016LINDY VOPNFJÖRÐtag:www.lindymusic.com,2005:Post/45162162016-11-17T13:55:00-05:002018-08-28T11:19:27-04:004.6 out of 5!

Aktualnie w lipcu premierę miało najnowsze solowe wydawnictwo Lindy Vopnfjörða zatytułowane „Frozen in time”.

Znajduje się tu też piosenka („After The Surveillance State”) inspirowana powieścią. Konkretnie chodzi o „Little brother” autorstwa Cory Doctorow.

Szósty w dyskografii album Lindy Vopnfjörð to zbiór pieśni napisanych w stylu opowiadań trubadura. Artysta postawił na prostotę i ukazanie piękna muzyki folkowej. I przyznać trzeba, że muzyk prezentuje tutaj wyrafinowany talent i genialny warsztat songwriterski. Dzięki temu otrzymujemy dojrzałe, poruszające i szczere teksty opakowane w subtelne aranżacje i niebanalne melodie. Dlatego w każdym utworze „Frozen In Time” czuć ogrom włożonego weń serca i emocji, a także nadzieję na lepszą przyszłość.

„Frozen In Time” to piękna muzyka z tekstami chwytającymi za serce.

By Emily Zimmerman
Published Oct 28, 2016

9/10

For his fourth album, Manitoba-born singer/songwriter Lindy Vopnfjörd has recorded a stripped down, but catchy and lyrically complex song cycle. The tracks on Frozen in Time aren't songs of love at first sight, or rebellious anthems — they're about the middle of relationships and the reality of politics, the conflict and comfort and negotiations that come with trying to make something last.

The simple acoustics of the production and arrangements keep the album cohesive, though each song stands on its own. The wistful, bluesy folk of "Standing at My Door" turns mournful in the 6/8 time of "Melting," and though a janglier, more upbeat arrangement could make hooky songs like "Another Round" or "Closer than You Know" into power-pop hits, it's best to leave that to the inevitable covers. Here, they work perfectly well as they are.

There's something wintery about the whole album, and whether that means a chilling wind or a comforting blanket depends on so many factors. Frozen in Time reminds us that you can't get properly safe and cozy without awareness and experience of the storm outside.
Lindy Vopnfjord – Frozen In Time

Lindy Vopnfjörd is a proficient storyteller who distills human experience into the vital emotions that crisply and memorably define moments. This collection of 13 songs form the Toronto-based artist explores a vast, folk-inspired landscape ranging from light-hearted recollections to dark tales, as he, with quiet tenderness, invites the listener in to his world of wisdom and attention to social consciousness, human rights, political oppression.
LINDY VOPNFJÖRÐtag:www.lindymusic.com,2005:Post/45161862016-10-25T13:05:00-04:002018-04-01T09:05:07-04:00FYI MUSIC NEWS - A Conversation With ...Lindy Vopnfjörd

A Conversation With ...Lindy Vopnfjörd

By Jason Schneider

As a country that boasts way more than its fair share of world-class singer/songwriters, often as listeners we must make an uncomfortable “Sophie’s choice” about which ones we’ll follow. Yet, from the time I first got to know Lindy Vopnfjörd about 20 years ago when he would perform regularly at the Jane Bond Café in Waterloo, Ontario, I knew he was somebody whose music would be a part of my life for years to come.

It wasn’t just his larger-than-life Icelandic personality, or his ability to capture the essence of Bob Dylan songs better than anyone I’d ever heard, it was the pure joy he exuded out of simply making a connection with an audience, and how that formed the basis of his original material.

Each release from the Toronto-based Lindy is therefore cause for celebration for his longtime followers, as well as a fresh opportunity for new ones to come on board. His latest independent album, Frozen In Time(out Oct. 28), in many ways recaptures the spirit of those unforgettable nights I experienced all those years ago, as opposed to Lindy’s more power pop-oriented offerings made on his own or with the band Major Maker he led with Todor Kobakov who continues to serve as his producer.

Frozen In Time’s focus is squarely on storytelling in the finest troubadour tradition, with songs touching on everything from escapes from North Korea and wrongful convictions in India, to tales of his Norse ancestors and a few introspective ballads. Overall, the album displays an artist at the top of his game, and ready to take the next step up to the national stage. For more info go to lindymusic.com

What sets Frozen In Time apart from your previous work?

This album is a return to my folk roots. It is intended to be a pure folk record, my performances all recorded live without any edits or vocal comps. It is also the hardest I've worked at writing songs. With the mentoring of my songwriting coach, James Linderman, I've been able to take on more daring topics. From stories of freedom champions, including an English professor wrongfully imprisoned in India who sent me his prison diary, to a young man in Ethiopia beaten by government security forces for holding a meeting to encourage entrepreneurialism. There are stories of love too.

What song on the new record do you feel best captures the overall musical vision for the album, and is there a story behind writing it?

Melodically and poetically I think “Far Behind” captures the feel of the record best. This song was written for young North Korean defector, Yeonmi Park. I heard her speak in New York and was so blown away by her courage and what she had to go through to find freedom that I wrote two songs for her. This one is inspired by her escape, her incredible journey crossing the Gobi Desert on foot, and the moment where she and her mother were finally reunited, after several years, with Yeonmi's sister in South Korea.

What has been the biggest change in your life over the past year?

The biggest change has definitely been adjusting to having two small children and how much work that is. I'm loving nearly every minute of it though. (Laughs)

What have been among your most memorable touring experiences, in Canada or elsewhere?

Touring with Whitehorse last year was incredible. We've known each other for many years and so it was really fun. I got to perform at Massey Hall for the first time, which was something I'll never forget. The shows in the U.S. were also a breath of fresh air.

What are your fondest musical memories as you were growing up?

My parents and my brother and I had a folk singing group called The Hecla Singers. We would sing Icelandic folk songs and wear these so called traditional Icelandic costumes. Of course, I've been to Iceland many times since and have yet to find these costumes in any museum there! We performed all over with this group and it was a wonderful way to grow up.
LINDY VOPNFJÖRÐtag:www.lindymusic.com,2005:Post/45162192016-10-14T14:15:00-04:002017-10-15T09:57:27-04:00Independent Clauses - Mid-October Singles, pt. 1 article

“Melting” – Lindy Vopnfjord.
Lindy Vopnfjörd's last solo effort arrived with 2013's Young Waverer, and now the Icelandic-Canadian musician is ready to return with the next album under his own name. Titled Frozen in Time, the new album is set to land on October 28.

The upcoming record was produced by Vopnfjörd's Major Maker bandmate Todor Kobakov and features additional help on guitar from Whitehorse's Luke Doucet.

The new set of songs hears the singer-songwriter exploring themes of "hope, despair, triumph and loss" across sonic landscapes that range from common and dulcet-light to epic and dark. Those themes and sounds come to life through Vopnfjörd's acoustic guitar and stories about everything from freedom champions to Vikings to his love for his wife.

The first sampling of the new material arrives as "Melting," and you can listen to it right now.

"'Melting' was written at the Reykjavik Folk Festival," Vopnfjörd tells Exclaim! "The Icelandic artists performing there were mind blowing. Like lava and glaciers, Icelandic poetry and music are always claiming new ground. And while I was there, the weather kept changing drastically every five minutes. It was like I was transported to another world."

Hear him bring that other world into your headphones in the player below.

LINDY VOPNFJÖRÐ
